Tasmanian Iconic Walks has an impressive ability to raise money for Stroke Foundation – so impressive it won its first award at the Business East Awards this month!  By blending an enchanting and challenging wilderness hike from Tasman Arch to Fortescue Bay Tasmanian Iconic Walks’ founder Jo Cordell-Cooper suspected the participants would embrace the fundraising requirement of this event.

“We were totally blown away by the level of interest in our event” says Jo who runs the not for profit organisation from her home in Geilston Bay with a board of 5 directors (all some way intimately affected by stroke).  Not only did we have 18 teams of 4 sign up for our inaugural event, some of them got really competitive around the fundraising, knowing that 100% of their fundraising would go to Stroke Foundation”.

Each team was required to raise just $1000 – just $250 each.  The inaugural event raised almost $28,000!

While fundraising to assist stroke survivors is a great cause Tasmanian Iconic Walks also educates participants about the value of reducing your own risk factor for stroke while enjoying nature with friends.

“The second highest risk factor for stroke is low levels of physical exercise (high blood pressure is number 1) so when people sign up to go on this walk they understand it is a 17 km, 7-8 hour adventure they are signing up for.  They have to prepare for it over a few months and consequently they are addressing their own risk factors.  We appeal to the adventure that is within so many of us – the taking on of a big physical goal and training to be fit enough to really thrive on the day”  says Jo who is a personal trainer by profession.  “Additionally we have created fitness training resources so for those who really don’t know where to start to be fit enough for such a long event we help you.  We have video resources as well as articles to get you fit and healthy on the day”.
