Hopefully, everyone is already thinking about training for the Tasmanian Iconic Walks event if you aren’t a big walker already. It will help you on event day if you’ve got some miles in!
There are many bushwalks around Hobart and lots that are great day or half day trips around the state. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful place, with walking experiences that include bush, beach, mountains, and magnificent views.
Bushwalking tips and advice
You will find lots of resources on the internet, formal websites, and blogs that include lots of tips. If you’re looking for local Hobart walks – check out Greater Hobart Trails for a list of walks around the Hobart municipalities.
Going further afield, visit the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service list of 60 Great Short Walks. This site has walks in the south, north, and northwest regions of Tasmania. Many are in small towns that have lost many visitors and tourists due to COVID, so plan a day walk and visit some local cafes to recoup!
Tips for bushwalking with kids
If you’re hiking with kids, The Greater Hobart Trail site includes filters so you can choose walks that are ok for:
- dogs
- prams
- wheelchairs
- bikes
There are lots of options for a quick walk after work or a more extended trip.
Whichever walk you choose, remember to take appropriate hiking gear. That could be water and sunscreen for a short stroll or a day pack with snacks and a first aid kit if you’re heading out for a more extended trip.
How to prepare for our Tasmanian Iconic Walks event
To prepare as best you can for the Tasmanian Iconic Walks event, we suggest you try a few longer walks of 10+km and also make sure you tackle some hills.
